The Convention, aimed at enhancing effectiveness of the measures for preventing and combating corruption in the member states of the Organisation, was adopted in 2023 in the first meeting of the heads of the public bodies of the OIC countries. Its ratification was expected to be finalised by March 2023, but that did not happen.
On 26-27 November 2024 Doha (Qatar) hosted the second meeting of the heads of anti-corruption bodies of the OIC countries with the participation of representatives of international and regional organisations, including:
- UN Office on Drugs and Crime;
- INTERPOL;
- Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units;
- International Anti-Corruption Academy;
- World Bank;
- Arab League;
- Gulf Cooperation Council;
- African Union;
- European Union;
- Global Operational Network of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Authorities (GlobE Network).
In the second meeting, the Convention was signed by 21 out of 57 OIC member states.
The decision to establish an open-ended intergovernmental expert group was also taken in the event. The body will have the following functions:
- Analyse and develop the tools facilitating the implementation of the Convention and mechanisms for monitoring relevant activities;
- Develop technical guidance and guidance on implementing the requirements of the Convention at the legislative level to facilitate and enhance effectiveness of the implementation of the Convention by the OIC member states.
The next meeting of the OIC will be hosted by Azerbaijan in 2026.
